It is that time again, where many want to set a resolution for the new year. I always get the same question around this time: How do I get started? I thought I would make a quick guide to help anyone get started. Now this shouldn’t be just a quick resolution, so aim for at least a full year of juicing/cleansing. I am on year 3 and I do not plan to stop as I feel it is just part of my daily life now.
Step#1: Buy a good juicer that makes this easy!
The Breville Juice Fountain: The most powerful, fast and easy juicer out there! Put a baggie in the catcher, rinse off the parts when done. Scrub just the blade/mesh basket with soap and water. Done!
There is quite a battle going on out there as to which is better for you between juicing and blending. I get this question a lot: “well couldn’t you just eat the produce”? The answer to that is yes, but who would want to eat 1 apple, 1 pear, 1/2 beet, 2-3 kale leaves, 1 lemon, ginger in one sitting….You would also live in the bathroom! haha.
When you eat the produce your body needs to use energyto break down the fiber and extract the juices containing the vitamins and minerals. When you make a smoothie in a ninja or bullet, your body still needs to use energy to break down the insoluble fiber going through your gi tract.
When you juice produce, you can extract the vitamins and minerals from the fiber and your gi system just rests!!! Almost 100% of the nutrients go directly into your blood stream and nothing is wasted within your body. There still is some soluble fiber contained within the juice and this is also absorbed.
When you do a juice fast your body gets to rest for 1-3+ days from processing solid foods. It allows it to focus on healing now instead of processing fiber and food particles.
Juicing is quite unique and if you don’t eat your fruits and veggies/herbs, it is a great way to get them into your body fast!!
“Wheatgrass restores alkalinity to the blood. The juice’s abundance of alkaline minerals helps reduce over-acidity in the blood and thus also Is a powerful detoxifier, and liver protector. It increases red blood-cell count and lowers blood pressure. It also cleanses the organs and gastrointestinal tract of debris. Wheatgrass stimulates the metabolism and the body’s enzyme systems by enriching the blood. It also aids in reducing blood pressure by dilating the blood pathways throughout the body. Pound for pound, wheatgrass is more than twenty times denser in nutrients than other choice vegetables. Nutritionally, wheatgrass is a complete food that contains 98 of the 102 earth elements.” (Taken from eatlocalgrown.com)
This stuff is quite amazing for your overall health. It seems like a miracle food and it is! There are many ways to include wheatgrass into your diet. I do not have a wheatgrass juicer so I purchased some organic wheatgrass supplements. It comes in the form of pills or powder that you can mix into drinks. These versions are very close to the real juice if you cannot get it.
Now that I have made it clear that Crohn’s is due to the start of a severe bacteria imbalance caused by processed food and chemicals, Let’s create juice recipes to specifically target yeast, fungi, bacteria and parasite overgrowth. By restoring the balance, your immune system begins to behave as it should and inflammation decreases. It sure makes a lot of sense when you really think about it. This is why fecal transplants, short term antibiotics/antifungals and probiotics are successful.

I hope you really think about and research how to bring yourself back to the correct balance. I am telling you that is a major key!
This colorful mix was consumed today and it was good enough to share. All of these ingredients were purchased at Trader Joes’ except for the parsley. This recipe follows the 4 component rule for constructing a well balanced juice.
Base: Coconut water
Sweet/Fruit: Apple, grape, carrot
Greens: Kale, Parsley
Alkalize/anti-inflammatory: Lemon, ginger
This was super energizing right off the bat and I felt great all day. Give this one a try!!
This is a good article on vitamins that individuals with Crohn’s Disease are lacking. These are the exact vitamins that you get a tremendous amount of when you juice everyday. When using this site link to build a juice recipe: http://juicerecipes.com/build/
It allows you to see the nutrition break down of all of the ingredients. Here is a sample mixture that I am making today and then check out these vitamin percentages!!!
200% vitamin A 500% vitamin C 2,882% vitamin K 16 grams of protein
I get numbers like this each and every day!! It is obvious why it works so well!!!
After a trip to get Mexican for lunch, I went right out and created a deep detox drink. The food was great don’t get me wrong, but new food always makes me nervous after being so careful for 5+ years. This mix is only for the brave however who juice for health. It was ok on taste, but not for the newbie juicer. Here are the ingredients:
Deep Red Detox
1 large beet peeled
1 bunch cilantro
1 bunch parsley
1 large pear
1 whole lemon with skin
3 leaves collard greens
2 inch ginger
3 stalks of celery
This mix is a major combo for cleansing, killing bacteria, energy and rebuilding damaged tissue. Give it a try and if you want to sweeten it up, just add a couple of apples.
I created another crazy combo of ingredients that will alkalize, detoxify and heal you from the inside out. This one punches Crohn’s in the face!!! It was a bit on the bitter side with a bit of sweetness to help it go down smooth. I also added coconut water to smooth out the taste as well.
1 yellow beet
The lemon, apple, carrot and coconut water help to smooth/sweeten this drink. You can still taste the bitterness of the dandelion greens, but you know its doing great things for your entire body!!!
