Resolution Time 2017

It is that time again, where many want to set a resolution for the new year.  I always get the same question around this time: How do I get started?  I thought I would make a quick guide to help anyone get started.  Now this shouldn’t be just a quick resolution, so aim for at least a full year of juicing/cleansing.  I am on year 3 and I do not plan to stop as I feel it is just part of my daily life now.

Step#1: Buy a good juicer that makes this easy!

The Breville Juice Fountain: The most powerful, fast and easy juicer out there! Put a baggie in the catcher, rinse off the parts when done.  Scrub just the blade/mesh basket with soap and water. Done!

Step #2:  Sign up for the FREE 30 day juicing challenge.  Tracee gives you free shopping lists and daily recipes that start out easy.  Toward the end, you get into the more advanced juices.

Step#3: Watch every video from Dan Mcdonald, Jay Kordich, Rawfully Kristina and Jason Vale.  These people are very inspirational and provide great tips, recipes and health information.

Step #4: (Optional Cleansing)

Herbal once a week cleansing:

**The Beet Transit Test**

The article link above provides some excellent information on how to check your colon health and to keep it as healthy as possible.  I do a beet transit test each Sunday as part of my mock fecal transplant therapy that I have posted about many times.

For a normal human you should start to see beet red stool after about 18-24 hours of consuming it.  When you have cleansed everything out as I have mentioned before, you see that much faster and you know you are now clear.

This test can tell you a lot of things.

  1. If you never see the beets: you are really constipated and slow moving in the gi.
  2. If you see it too quickly and you have not cleansed, you have IBS-D active.
  3. If you see it in about 12+ hours, you are doing pretty well.

Here is my recipe for today and it was pretty tasty also:

Beet Transit Juice + Choice probiotic

  • 3 small/med beets
  • 3 apples
  • 1/2 bag cranberries
  • 1/2 lemon
  • Coconut water to taste

Please consider the weekly cleanse.  I cleanse out with herbal and PH water.  I drink this juice and take probiotics to reseed the gi tract.

Have a great week ahead :):)

Fecal Transplant Alternative

The link above talks about using fecal transplants to alter the gi environment which allows the patient to achieve remission from Crohn’s Disease.

The concept of this successful treatment caused me to find an easier way to change the flora weekly.  It is also much easier and very cheap.

The Fecal Transplant Alternative Treatment:

  1. You must find a way to clear out all fecal matter in your gi/colon first.  I use a lot of water and a prescription medicine for a pain I get from constipation (Linzess). The goal here is to get it all out! This mimics the fecal transplant because it is like the colonoscopy prep, but much easier!!
  2. The next phase is re-population of the gi/colon.  I take some probiotics and create a super juice that you will see below.  This mimics the insertion of someone’s healthy flora/fecal matter into your colon.  Again, so much easier!!
  3. Continue to add in extremely health juices and probiotics.  This is done once a week!

If you are weekly purging the gi system and adding in the good stuff to create the ideal environment, you can limit symptoms and keep Crohn’s Disease at bay.

Re-population Juice:

  • 2 apples
  • 4-5 carrots
  • 1 large beet
  • Kale
  • 1 whole lemon with skin

Take this juice and blend in 1/2 avocado with ice!  This will also help with hunger!!

Juicing for Crohns, Nutrition and Energy

The first year of daily juicing was an exciting one.  I placed myself into remission without the aid of drugs or steroids with just fruits, vegetables, supplements and probiotics.  I gave my trillions of cells exactly the type of nutrition that they needed and really felt the boost in energy that lasted all day long.

Then while not changing anything in my routine, I ended up with a bowel obstruction back in October 27.  I was baffled as to how this could have happened when everything was going so well. It wasn’t until a few months later on that I made the connection between my dog getting sick and passing away to this hospitalization.  He passed away just 2-3 weeks prior to the obstruction.  The doctor said that I had had a stress induced flare up.  My wife also reminded me that this happened with both of my children coming along.

I now take a small dose SSRI to reduce any stress that I don’t even know is there.  With being a teacher of 8 year old children, struggling with money, my dog passing and having kids of my own, I actually have a lot of stress going on.

With all of that said, I have not stopped a single day of juicing.  I believe that it can do amazing things for your gut environment and will heal your damaged gi lining. It gives me energy and boosts my immunity greatly!  It provides the ultimate nutrition when food is limited!!

My newest venture is doing some juice classes at people’s homes to show them how to combine ingredients and create great tasting recipes.  If you are in the Charlotte area, drop me a message at the e-mail above if you are interested.

Something new that I have added into my supplement routine are Turmeric pills.  I take one after dinner and it is said to be stronger than the steroid that the doctor prescribes for inflammatory response.  = Drew has a drink for ya!

Green Juice is the Key:

  • Pineapple
  • Pear
  • Kale
  • Spinach
  • Cucumber
  • 1/2 lemon
  • Turmeric and or Ginger!!

Odds are that if you have found my site, you are looking for alternative methods.  You have certainly found it right here:)

The Slow Juicing Difference

Recently, I started to notice that my Breville Juice Fountain Plus began to develop cracks in the top cover closest to the blade.  It would have cost around $40+ dollars to replace just that part so I decided to research cold press slow juicers.  I watched many interesting videos and learned quite a few interesting facts.

Slow Juicers

  • Rotate at about 80rpm
  • They do not heat the produce or add oxygen
  • They preserve the enzymes and vitamins longer
  • They get more out of your produce for a higher yield
  • The juice is more concentrated and lasts up to 3 days
  • Almost no foam
  • Great ability to juice greens, wheatgrass and fruits/vegetables

My Breville was excellent, don’t get me wrong!  I love that machine and I think it is fantastic.  When you move to slow juicing, you move to another level and you get the best quality juice you can get.  Sure it will take longer to juice and cut up some of the produce, but in the end it is all worth it when you live a normal life and rid yourself of medication.

The last few juices that I have made were from a single auger crank juicer.  The juice came out a rich color with a ton of flavor.  It did not separate from the oxygen and heat.  It was an interesting difference and I await this new juicer to get more leafy greens in:)

In my next post I want to talk about how I had to do a 2-3 day juice fast due to a blockage from undigested food(Nuts).  I believe that doing a fast hits a reset button for your intestines and flora.  I believe someone who struggles with Crohn’s would greatly benefit from doing a juice fast along with probiotics/probiotic soups(Miso).

Crohn’s : Not a life sentence!!

There are two types of people out there who have Crohn’s.  Those that believe it can be cured and will stop at nothing to find a way and those that think medicine is the only answer.  I once believed that there was no way to reverse all of the damage. I believed that for a good 4 years!  After starting juicing and reading up on it, my view has changed completely.  I have always tried to find a way to heal even before juicing.  I would not accept that drugs were the only answer.  The doctors will tell you and even brainwash you into thinking that food does not play a role in the development of Crohn’s.  “Just take your medicine”, they say.  Simply put, they make money for pushing certain medications and food is the root cause!

Do this for yourself for a full 30 days and you too will understand my thinking and feel great results:

  • Drop processed food completely!!!!
  • Take a great probiotic
  • Juice 1x a day about 24oz for 30 days = (Green juices are the best)
  • Take a great vitamin
  • Switch to bottled water only

These are the changes that I made and it has made a world of difference!! After doing all of this for a month or so, I slowly dropped the medicine until I was completely free of it!  I am now going on 6 months free of all medicines.

Let me know if any of this works for you and I will do a feature story on your personal success.

The Great Green Detox Drink

Want to knock out Crohn’s/Colitis?  Drink this recipe 2-3 times per week for 30 days and reboot the intestinal environment to run like a healthy machine!

  • 1 Apple
  • 1 Pear
  • 1 full lemon
  • Half cucumber
  • 2-3 celery
  • 1 handful of spinach
  • 2 leaves Kale
  • 1 bunch parsley
  • 1 bunch cilantro
  • 2 inches of ginger

This will probably make about 32oz of juice so you may want to half the recipe or tweak it.  This combination has everything you need to begin to reverse the harmful effects of Crohn’s.  The apple, pear and lemon will help to cover any bitter flavors and bring it all together.  The greens will alkalize your body and begin the healing process.  If you have an overgrowth of bacteria, this drink will begin to cleanse that out as well.  The ginger, pear and greens will soothe inflammation!!  Remember Crohn’s hates green!

!!Statistics Wanted!!

I have been searching for statistics on Crohn’s Disease in other countries.  Specifically those with Crohn’s in the countries of China, Japan and India.  These countries have significantly lower numbers than anywhere else in the world.  Many sites state that food is the #1 factor, and that seems to be a no brainer.  I never really get that many hits from these countries so one can conclude that the need to research this disease is quite low there.  Guess the country that is always on top for site hits??

If you are from any of these countries and have any information on Crohn’s, please send me some information, videos, links, charts, diagrams ect...  This should be interesting!

My Struggle with Food Choices

Food has always been a struggle for me during my 5 years of Crohn’s and figuring out what works and what hurts has been a battle.  I think it is even harder these days because I have so many restrictions and I am honestly afraid to step off the path and try new things.  I always worry, “well maybe it was the gluten that started it all” or “maybe it was some weird chemical in processed food”.   This is such a mind battle and I don’t want to go back to those problems again or stir up the symptoms.  I actually am afraid of food at times to the point of anxiety, “should I eat it and what is going to happen”? I get a little anxiety after I eat it, worrying what the result might be.  “Am I ruining all of my progress”? All of this has caused a drop in weight due to low calorie consumption and now that poses another challenge for me.  What can I eat to get the weight back up without killing my system?

I think having the juice in there daily to help cleanse and keep the balance provides piece of mind.  I am also looking to add a shake recipe that would be safe and provide a lot of calories.  I have yet to find a shake that is dairy, gluten free and low fiber with high calorie 500+.  If you know of a brand or have created a shake recipe of your own, please post and let us all know.  Thank you!!

Juicing4crohns : Begin the right way!

Although the fastest way to healing Crohn’s is through green juices, it is best not to just jump right in at the very start.  Your pallet needs to be trained to truly appreciate a green juice.  The last thing you want to do is get turned off right away because it tastes too different from what you are used to.

The key is to start off with 1-3 ingredients that taste great.  I suggest to many people who start out to try apple/orange or apple/pear for a few days.  Next, try adding in a cucumber or celery into the mix.  These two ingredients provide a lot of water and are mild tasting.  The first green ingredient that you should add is spinach because it is also on the bland side of taste.  A good starter green recipe would be apple, cucumber, spinach.

When you are tired of these combinations and want to juice for the health more than for the taste, it is time for the ultimate healer (green juice)!  Although there are ways to sweeten green juice and make it taste awesome, remember it is for health first and taste second.

Here is my first green juice recipe for healing :

  • Apple         = Sweet
  • Cucumber  = Hydration
  • Lemon       = Detox
  • Kale           = Inflammation/Detox
  • Cilantro      = Inflammation/Detox
  • Ginger       = Inflammation/Everything!!

These days I always make my drinks based off of health benefits and never taste!
