**The Beet Transit Test**

The article link above provides some excellent information on how to check your colon health and to keep it as healthy as possible.  I do a beet transit test each Sunday as part of my mock fecal transplant therapy that I have posted about many times.

For a normal human you should start to see beet red stool after about 18-24 hours of consuming it.  When you have cleansed everything out as I have mentioned before, you see that much faster and you know you are now clear.

This test can tell you a lot of things.

  1. If you never see the beets: you are really constipated and slow moving in the gi.
  2. If you see it too quickly and you have not cleansed, you have IBS-D active.
  3. If you see it in about 12+ hours, you are doing pretty well.

Here is my recipe for today and it was pretty tasty also:

Beet Transit Juice + Choice probiotic

  • 3 small/med beets
  • 3 apples
  • 1/2 bag cranberries
  • 1/2 lemon
  • Coconut water to taste

Please consider the weekly cleanse.  I cleanse out with herbal and PH water.  I drink this juice and take probiotics to reseed the gi tract.

Have a great week ahead :):)

Crohn’s: Fueled by Food/Antibiotics?

We are always looking to figure out why we have this disease.  Where did it come from and what caused it? It is not new news that Crohn’s has increased greatly in the last 10-20 years.  The article above seems to place the blame on overuse of antibiotics as children and junk food/processed food.  Both of these impact the balance of good and bad bacteria.

It also mentions environmental factors and genetics.  I do believe that genetics plays a big roll here, but to have such a sharp increase over the last 10 years sort of cancels out the genetic factor for most people.  We turn to look at the food and drug use with that fact in mind.

If our bacteria balance is truly a major factor in the increase of Crohn’s, how do we completely overturn it and keep it that way??

If anyone knows the answer to this question, please chime in and help us out?? So far I have been able to do this to some extent with juicing, antibiotic foods like garlic and oregano and fermented foods.

I think good vs bad bacteria is a very good option for treatment considering the success with high potency probiotics (VSL#3).  This is a treatment, but it does not permanently fix the imbalance.

There almost needs to be a sequence where you cleanse out everything like a colonoscopy.  Next, kill all bacteria with natural methods and then add in large amounts of good bacteria.  After this is done eat food that will keep the bacteria in check and that should induce full remission.

I am still looking for a perfect way to do this, but so far there is no way to keep the balance of bacteria in check forever. It seems like just taking a probiotic is just not enough.

Here is what I would like to try:  I would do a full colonoscopy prep to cleanse everything out.  Next, take flagyl for 2 weeks to a month to kill everything.  Next VSL#3 and juicing daily to repopulate.  I think that would be a good option, but it’s getting the doctor to prescribe the drug and the cost of the VSL#3 that stops me.

Also, I get myself in trouble to doing things not suggested by my doc ,but sometimes it pays off.

**Current Natural Plan**

I seem to be always changing my strategy when it comes to natural remedies, but I think this whole thing is a changing process.  I have adapted my thinking on medicinal interventions and having natural remedies added has not changed.  You need it!

Diet:  I remain on a soft low fiber diet called Low Residue.  It just means that all food will break down easily and leave little waste to clog me up.  This means eliminating insoluble fiber from fruits and veggies.  Without these, where do I get nutrition? http://www.nmh.org/ccurl/84/948/lowfiber-diet07.pdf

Medical Interventions: I take my Lexapro 1x a day and this keeps the stress down very low.  I internalize all stress and I keep a smile on the outside.  I take Prednisone 2x a day and I will be off to the doc this week to see about weaning down and replacing with a longer term – Which I will Take As Directed!!!! 🙂

Current Natural Plan:  The afternoon when I come home from work is natural intervention time.  This is when I get my maximum nutrition to help with what I can’t eat throughout the day.

  • I make a 32oz mason jar of juice.  It usually ends up red or green, but the key to all the juice combos is to think anti-inflammatory.  Kale, Ginger, Turmeric, Lemon, Beets, Celery, Pineapple, ect…This is when I get more nutrition than the average joe who eats a normal diet.
  • I take 70 Billion Count Probiotic.  I purchased Dr. Mercola’s Probiotic brand because I like the work he does and what he speaks about.  His also has research that backs up some of the strains.  The juice also helps to feed the probiotics with prebiotics to keep it healthy.
  • I take a liquid vitamin. I take a highly potent vitamin from Alive.  It has vitamins, green foods and tons of other good stuff in it. It does not taste awesome, but I have juiced garlic, carrot and parsley once and I can handle it:)
  • I take my Oregano Oil.  This is my natural antibiotic that will only kill any bacterial overgrowth and not harm my probiotic strains. Doctors do prescribe an antibiotic like this, but it might kill your probiotic.

In addition to all of this, I still need to take a tablespoon of Miralax with dinner to keep things super easy.  I also take a Metamucil fiber supplement in the morning with breakfast to get my fiber that I miss.

It is not, but it is my current plan and I deal with it daily.  I have a routine and I tweak it if needed.  I am trying and not giving up.  That is the key!! Later ya’ll:)

Lifestyle changes: The Juice Remains the Same

It has been quite a year!  My 10th year of teaching was supposed to be a positive milestone, but I just didn’t have the best feeling about it going in for some reason.  I had been juicing non-stop daily for over a year with zero medications and then stress hit and I had no idea what a factor it really was.  As my poor puppy Cooper was getting sick, I had all that stress internalized and the juice and diet just could not deal with it.  Hospitalization #1 was due to Cooper passing and stress at work.

To prevent another hospitalization I juiced more and took Lexapro for the stress and that really helped greatly at work. The 1st hospitalization from stress would not be the last unfortunately and did not completely resolve itself as I did not like taking medication again.

Hospitalization #2 taught me that I needed to take my medication and stop self treating! Not so much for me, but for my family who has to deal with me:)

I now take predisone for a small amount of time until the doctor makes the decision to wean me off.  He will replace that with a long term medication that I will take as directed!

The diet is all soft and not that full of nutrients like the vegan diet I sampled for over 2 months.  This is where juicing comes in along with a liquid vitamin for nutrition.

Since my diet is lacking nutrition, I need/must add the juice in everyday at about 24-32+oz.  I need to take my medication to prevent these unknown situations, but I need to provide a healthy gut and juicing will do that for me.

In summation, do what works for you and adapt as needed.  You must find a way to get rapid nutrition in so that your body is super strong to allow healing to happen.  The juicing remains the same and I hope always will.  Get that juice in you and start to feel the difference in energy, mood and feeling.  Take care!:)

Today’ Recipe: It’s All Green

  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 2-3 celery
  • 1 lemon whole
  • 1/4 pineapple
  • 2 apples
  • KALE
  • Ginger

The Food We Eat: Food Matters

www.fmtv.com  = Food Matters the movie and many other eye opening movies about juice, food and health.

I was watching the movie Food Matters featuring David Wolfe and he kept on repeating throughout the film “let food be thy medicine”.  It got me thinking not about what I eat, but what I have seen from other people who have realized this way of thinking.  Many videos on youtube and around the web have proven the above statement when it comes to disease and health.

When you watch Dan McDonald through youtube, he states that much of the food we eat today is not designed to truly feed your body and give it what it needs. It is designed unfortunately to cause inflammation and disease.  Why does this happen?

Before we get to that answer, another observation that I have found is that every well known person out there who is promoting juicing and super food eating has had a life long illness plus medications.

  • Jason Vale = psoriasis and gastro
  • Lou Corona = Cancer
  • Joe Cross = weight and Urticaria
  • Tracee Sloan = Lupus
  • Jay Kordich = Cancer

All of these people are juicing and eating super foods now because before that they were not, and they were sick.  Some of the above were not given long to live and they are all here today.

Why is disease and especially autoimmune conditions on the rise? I have learned that processed foods cause inflammation because your body thinks its an invader or virus if it is not natural and what the body needs.  An inflammatory response occurs with food that is not what the body needs.  It does not need chemicals and preservatives so it creates inflammation and attacks not only the food, but you in the process.

So what am I doing? I do not eat processed foods that contain extra chemicals or preservatives.  Instead I am trying to eat foods in a natural state more often.  I realize that some of my food is processed and not perfect, but I hope to balance that out with natural foods.  I tried this yesterday with a salad and it was amazing.  It is almost like the food we are told to avoid at the doctors office is that food that might actually heal us?

Joe Cross Super Food Salad = Amazing Stuff!!!!

  • Mixed power greens
  • 1/2 chopped avocado
  • chopped basil
  • 1 orange cut up
  • 1/4 fennel diced
  • cherry tomatoes
  • Dressing – TJ’s Olive oil and Red wine vinegar

Surviving this salad will be a big win for me and an open door to many new varieties of food.  I believe that through juicing and smart food choices that we can all achieve what the individuals above have achieved.

I also realize that the doctors are there to help, but only know one way to do it.  It is up to you to research and understand that covering the problem will not solve it.  Use the medication instead to help get you to a place so that you feel healthy enough to make some big food and juicing changes.

I hope you all have a good week.  I’m off to cut up a pineapple:)

The Vegan Diet Experiment

I have seen countless videos from real people with crohn’s disease that say their symptoms have literally disappeared while trying to avoid meat and dairy.  They have gone off all medication and have been symptom free for many years.

They say the reason is that meat, dairy and eggs are not easily digestible and cause inflammation for those who are sensitive. I love eggs and I have been avoiding dairy even before diagnosis.

I decided to download an app that can scan bar codes to see what is vegan and what is not.  I was surprised to see that many of the foods I was already eating checked out vegan anyway.  I now just need to find a way to sub in ingredients to take over the eggs in the morning, the chicken sausages and the turkey burgers.

I found a good site to give it a try called  http://pcrm.org/kickstartHome/mealplan/ It has a shopping list and a meal plan to give it a good try.

Now the ultimate goal here is to make foods that are not overly processed and are in their natural state.  This will take some time and for now I will just try to sub in ingredients for the meat.

This should be interesting and it is worth a good try in addition to my juicing.  Those individuals that are juicing every day and eating vegan are doing fantastic!! They are never sick, they have not medication for any disease and they are bursting with energy.  I kind of want to test this to see if I can join them too:):)

Here is one of them and she is fully raw vegan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4X7VHo-NBA

**High Anti-Inflammatory Juicing**

The List

  • Turmeric – The most anti-inflammatory substance on Earth.
  • Ginger – The second most anti-inflammatory substance.
  • Berries – Raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, blueberries ect..
  • Beets – A total blood purifier and great for energy.
  • Dark Leafy Greens – Kale, spinach, collards, parsley, cilantro, ect…
  • Lemons with skin – The skin contains the anti-inflammatory compounds.
  • Pineapple – Great also for digestion and immunity.
  • Celery – Highly anti-inflammatory and cooling.

Now to create a smooth tasting anti-inflammatory juice, I like to break it up into base, greens, sweet and power ingredient.

  • Base:  Celery 4 stalks
  • Greens:  Kale and Spinach
  • Sweet:  Pineapple, Whole Lemon, Apple
  • Power: Ginger and or Turmeric

The celery provides a good water base with sodium included.  The pineapple and apple also provide a good water base, but with added sweetness.  The whole lemon with the skin is needed to neutralize the bitterness of the kale.  The spinach does not have a strong taste.  The power anti-inflammatory ingredients boost up the power of this juice.  The taste of Turmeric will be lost in this mix so you can add quite a bit and not even notice.  If you add a bit too much ginger, you will surely notice.

I hope you enjoy how I think up these combinations each day.  Have a great weekend! ~Nick:)

My Ultimate Juice Recipe

Lou Corona’s:  Ultimate Lemon Ginger Blast

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZtGldiCsj4 = Who is Lou Corona?

http://puradyme.com/lifestyle/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Lemon-Ginger-Blast-Recipe.pdf = Actual Recipe

I have posted about this recipe in the past, but now it is time to bring out the big guns and go back to the juices I started with. I seem to have gotten away from creating juices with massive amounts of green chlorophyll.  I am personally starting a green juice week that may lead to a month or more.  The recipe above will be my start today, but I need to make some changes due to the produce that is available.

My adaptation: 16+ oz

  • 1 whole lemon with skin
  • 2 apples
  • 1-2 inch ginger
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 3-4 celery
  • 1/2 bunch parsley
  • 1/2 bunch cilantro
  • handful of fresh mint

This is the type of recipe that I started with over a year ago.  A recipe that is filled with chlorophyll and fights all sorts of disease, infection, overgrowth, inflammation and ulcerations.  It is time to go back to that and stick to it to help solve any inflammation that I personally have going on.

Every ingredient in this recipe has some powerful influence over anything going wrong in your body.  It is different from just creating something sweet like pineapple, orange and carrot.  The juice above is a powerhouse against inflammation that can drive Crohn’s disease and many other health problems.

Please take the time to check out Lou Corona and his 4 principles of thinking.  It truly makes a lot of sense and I wish I could follow all of his ideas, but the diet seems like a big challenge for me.  I can however make the LGB juice and take enzymes/probiotics daily to at least follow part of the plan.

New Year : New Challenges

I sure have learned a lot about myself in just a few short weeks as 2015 began.  After seeing my general doctor, dietitian and Gi specialist, we determined that I have been having a Crohn’s flare starting back in October.  I was placed on steroids to calm the inflammation and a special diet.  I was racking my brain trying to figure out what caused this to come about and then it hit me.  I lost my dog around October 5th and this was a really hard time before, during and after.  I landed in the hospital with a blockage on October 26th just a few weeks later.  This blockage was in the same location where my original Crohn’s had been.  Since that trip to the hospital I have been back and forth to my doctor and all blocked up.

We thought back even further and realized that I had major flares when my daughter was born and then again when my son was born.  I was pretty shocked to put this all together, but at the same time I identified a major trigger =STRESS!  Along with these situations I am an elementary school teacher and this comes with tremendous stress at times.  I decided to go on an anti-stress medication to hopefully diffuse any internal stress that can cause flares.

Now you better believe that I am juicing more than ever.  I switched out my masticating juicer for an upgraded Breville because I was not able to digest the fiber from the masticating juicer.  I bought turmeric and ginger to add to each juice for an anti-inflammatory kick to help the steroid out.

It was really hard for me to accept that I did not cure myself after all.  Stress is the one thing that I cannot seem to control like I can with food and supplements.  I need to change a few ideas around, but juicing for crohn’s remains what it is – pure nutrition!

I still believe that you can achieve full remission with a healthy diet, probiotics, anti-inflammatory juices and supplements.  I did it for one full year medicine free, but Stress comes out of nowhere.  It has been an interesting start – more recipes to come!

New Anti-Inflammatory Recipe

This juice recipe I created was pretty unique both in taste and in color.  The ingredients in this one mix together in an interesting way and almost taste tropical.  The color is like a salmon pink color which was quite a difference from what I have been making. I bought the aloe juice at Trader Joe’s for $1.99.  It comes in a small bottle and I usually have one when I go shopping there over the weekend.  Please make this one and let me know what you think.

Inflammation Soother

  • 10 oz organic aloe juice  – Anti-inflammatory
  • 1 apple – colon cleansing
  • 2-3 purple carrots – Antibacterial
  • 1/2 lemon with skin – Anti-inflammatory
  • 1 inch ginger – Anti-inflammatory
  • 1/4 fennel bulb – Anti-inflammatory

Please pass on this blog site to others who are having trouble with Crohn’s or Colitis.  I see way too many people on the social networks that still think the next drug is going to magically work for them.  They need to give this all a good solid try.

I am about to hit 10 months medicine free from Crohn’s.
