Stress-Anxiety-Crohn’s

There are many activators for Crohn’s Disease flare-ups.  Your diet is a major activator, but it is easy to control what you choose to put in your mouth.  Quality sleep can be another, but you can control the time you go to bed and when is best to wake up.

I have found that stress/anxiety is the hardest activator to control by far.  Sometimes you do not even feel the stress during your day, but it could be there slowly activating a Crohn’s flare. I got to the hospital thanks to stress/anxiety on 2 separate occasions. I was controlling my diet, sleeping fairly well, but work and personal life stress produced a Crohn’s flare that blocked my intestines twice!

After the second trip to the hospital, I promised myself and others that I would take my Crohn’s medication as directed.  I also asked to be placed on a daily stress/anxiety medication: Lexapro and now Celexa.

I literally can’t control the stress on my own.  I try to mentally do it, but I just can’t do it without medical intervention.  I know it is not great to take SSRI medication, but I just can’t do it on my own and I cannot land in the hospital again.

I still juice daily and take my turmeric supplements/vitamins.  I eat a lot of garlic and take probiotics here and there.  I find that this natural approach helps to keep tissue healthy and is wonderful for the entire body.  Too many benefits to list!

That said, the medical approach helps to control the stress that the natural method can not seem to treat.

I am sure many of you experience stress like I do and find that it really influences your symptoms.  Send a message and get the conversation going.

Thank you all:)

Fecal Transplant Alternative

http://www.webmd.com/ibd-crohns-disease/crohns-disease/news/20150410/stem-cells-fecal-transplants-show-promise-for-crohns-disease

The link above talks about using fecal transplants to alter the gi environment which allows the patient to achieve remission from Crohn’s Disease.

The concept of this successful treatment caused me to find an easier way to change the flora weekly.  It is also much easier and very cheap.

The Fecal Transplant Alternative Treatment:

  1. You must find a way to clear out all fecal matter in your gi/colon first.  I use a lot of water and a prescription medicine for a pain I get from constipation (Linzess). The goal here is to get it all out! This mimics the fecal transplant because it is like the colonoscopy prep, but much easier!!
  2. The next phase is re-population of the gi/colon.  I take some probiotics and create a super juice that you will see below.  This mimics the insertion of someone’s healthy flora/fecal matter into your colon.  Again, so much easier!!
  3. Continue to add in extremely health juices and probiotics.  This is done once a week!

If you are weekly purging the gi system and adding in the good stuff to create the ideal environment, you can limit symptoms and keep Crohn’s Disease at bay.

Re-population Juice:

  • 2 apples
  • 4-5 carrots
  • 1 large beet
  • Kale
  • 1 whole lemon with skin

Take this juice and blend in 1/2 avocado with ice!  This will also help with hunger!!

**A One Day Gi Rest**

If you have gotten the chance to watch Joe Cross and his first movie “Fat Sick and Nearly Dead”, you watched Joe drink juice for 60 days with little to no food.  That is an amazing accomplishment that takes a ton of mental/physical strength.  His goal was to lose weight and he sure did.

If you are someone with Crohn’s Disease your goal is to try and keep or gain weight.  This is where a shorter time frame would be more beneficial than 60 days.  Jason Vale is someone to follow for this as he has designed some 3 day, 7 day and other programs.

I am doing a 1 day bowel rest/cleanse today since I am off and I can make juice all day long. Benefits to a bowel rest for Crohn’s and overall health:

  • The first thing that I did was to clear out the whole colon completely.  You can do this with either a ton of juice/water or give it some help with a few caps of Miralax.  It is important to clear out the colon before you add in all of the good stuff.
  • After I was all cleansed out, I took some probiotics and some organic turmeric  and went to bed.  I woke up feeling awesome by the way!
  • I started my day with green tea and honey.
  • I next made a green juice 32oz for breakfast.
  • For lunch I made a juice with avocado and banana blending in to curb hunger.
  • Later on I made a bit more green tea to curb hunger.
  • At dinner time I had another juice with blended in avocado for hunger.

Resume food intake the next day and feel great!!! Your body will love this little break. If you do this once a week, which I plan to do, maybe it is just that little edge your body needs to win this crohn’s battle!

All the best everyone!

Crohn’s Disease and The Microbiome

We all know that Crohn’s Disease has a large connection to the good and bad bacteria in the gut.  This is called the Microbiome or your second brain. Now did the upset of the microbiome cause the Crohn’s Disease, or did the onset of Crohn’s disrupt the microbiome?

Either way, something must be done to change the health state of the bacteria in the gut. My current mission these days seems to be a weekly removal of the current bacteria and a replacement of good quality nutrients, vitamins and probiotics.

This can be accomplished by a one to two day weekend juice fast:

Friday Mid afternoon:

  • Large Bottle 320z of higher PH spring water
  • A 32oz of apple, beet, carrot, lemon juice:  1 to 2 bags of carrots to flush out!
  • Double up on your probiotic after you flush out to replace.
  • For dinner: any juice along with half an avocado blended in to keep full.

(Your body should flush out this night to make way for all the good stuff coming in)

Saturday Morning/Afternoon:

  • A large cup of green tea and honey
  • A morning green juice – any
  • Good spring water
  • Afternoon – Any juice along with a blended avocado to keep full.

Saturday night:  Eat a  light dinner – include garlic if you can to help purify!

I have to say that I felt so overly energized just doing this for 1-2 days.  I cannot imagine how it might feel if I did it for 30 days!

Evacuate – – – – – Replace – – – – – Heal

**Weekly Reset Part 2**

This is just a quick follow up to my first post about resetting.  As I was doing this Sunday weekly reset, I got to thinking of some key things that make this a fantastic protocol:

First of all, I am taking my Lialda like a good boy should.

  • Imagine clearing your body of all the crap that sticks to the walls of your intestines that prevent nutrients from absorbing.  Also, flushing out the bacterial overgrowth that most with Crohns have. Doing this flush with some quality juice and or PH water.
  • Now once you are all clear, Imagine taking some of the world’s most nutrient dense foods and extracting the juice so that this coats your damaged linings beginning to heal them.  Just about 100% of the nutrition is easily absorbed though a clean gi lining.
  • Finally, since you are all clear the juice remains inside healing and creating a new healthy environment.  You feel amazing, energized and clear headed.

Here is what is now sitting in my gi tract instead of intestinal plaque, candida yeast and harmful bacteria that all help to drive Crohns:

Super food Reset Juice/Smoothie

Greens: Cilantro, Parsley, Dino Kale

Water Base/Sweet: Green Bell Pepper, 2 Apples, 1/4 Pineapple, 1 Whole Lemon

Super Foods:  Ginger, Turmeric Root, Blended 1/2 Avocado

Probiotic:  20 billion with multiple strains

I know we are all different and nothing is a cure all for everyone.  I just know that if I only take my prescription medication without adding natural remedies, I might let the Crohns get the best of my system some day.  Fight the good Fight!

***Power Greens Juice***

Power Greens Variation:

  • 2 apples
  • 1 beet
  • 2 handfuls spinach
  • 2 handfuls Kale
  • 1/4 Pineapple
  • 1/2 Lemon with skin
  • 4 Celery spears
  • 1 inch ginger

This recipe comes off of my Android app with some added ingredients to add even more power.  I added the lemon to help cover the Kale and the Pineapple to sweeten some of the bitter flavors.

Here are the conditions that this mixture is great for:

Digestions, Diverticular Disease, Hemmorhoids, Indigestion, Fertility, IBD(Colitis and Crohns), Low Libido, Memory, Migrains, Circulation, Prostate Enlargement, Skin and many others.

This was quite a powerful one and not really for beginners.

The Cause of Crohn’s and Treatment

http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/crohns-disease-hospital-admissions-surge-300-because-of-junk-food-and-antibiotics-9548524.html = Crohn’s increasing 300% over the past 10+ years!

The article above is a bit scary to know how sharply Crohn’s has increased in a short period of time.  Sure detection methods have gotten better and you can blame it all on genetics you want, but to increase by 300%!! To increase that much there has to be much more to it than just genetics and better technology.

As I read about the MAP vaccine and many other articles, I believe Crohn’s is caused by a bacterial infection.  I believe that our air, drinking water, GMO processed food, Milk and wheat are responsible for causing this bacteria imbalance.  All of these things have changed over the last 10 years and are highly processed.  The chemicals used to keep these foods fresher longer must have a horrible effect on the gut flora balance.

So far, when testing Crohn’s patients for MAP over 93% test positive for the infection! Those that receive the triple antibiotic therapy to kill MAP go into remission rather quickly and that points to infection not heredity.

I remember taking Cipro for a month way back and I remember that my symptoms for Crohn’s greatly reduced.  At the same time though the Cipro was killing off the good bacteria as well.

Everything seems to point to a bacteria imbalance and I don’t think the immune system causes this.  I think the flora imbalance causes the immune system to begin the aggressive attack on everything.

It makes sense that strong probiotic therapies work.  Fecal transplants have worked as it changes the gut flora dramatically. Juicing works because many ingredients are antibacterial and anti-fungal.  The garlic and oregano work because both have anti-MAP properities.

So there are two schools of thought here I guess:

1.  Heredity/Genetics cause your immune system to go on the attack that creates a bacteria imbalance and food/environment has nothing to do with it.  300% increase of Crohn’s this way??

2.  Our food becoming void of nutrients, GMO/Pesticides go into the body and start to slowly change the good vs bad bacteria balance.  The MAP bacteria begin to grow out of control and your immune system starts to go on the attack.  The immune system needs to kick it up a notch and starts to attack everything even healthy tissue. Crohn’s begins and so does the endless cycle.

Treatment:

Immunomodulators:  Suppress the immune system so it does not attack healthy tissue, but the bacteria is still there.

Anti-inflammatories:  The immune system stays the same and creates inflammation.  The drugs soothe the inflammation, but the bacteria is still there!

Anti- MAP:  The triple antibiotic therapy seeks out to kill the bacteria first.  The immune system calms down and does not need to fight so hard.  Inflammation stops due to the immune system calming down.

My Natural Approach:  By taking the Oregano oil(antibiotic) and juicing daily, I was killing off this bacteria that was driving the immune system.  The juicing was also healing and nourishing.

It is hard to say what school of thought to go with.  I think it seems pretty obvious that for most people it is not heredity because there are just way too many cases popping up in developed nations when compared to those that are not industrialized.  They do not have the processed everything that we have:)

Thoughts……..?

Crohn’s: Fueled by Food/Antibiotics?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/10908884/Crohns-disease-in-teens-jumps-300-per-cent-in-10-years-fuelled-by-junk-food.html

We are always looking to figure out why we have this disease.  Where did it come from and what caused it? It is not new news that Crohn’s has increased greatly in the last 10-20 years.  The article above seems to place the blame on overuse of antibiotics as children and junk food/processed food.  Both of these impact the balance of good and bad bacteria.

It also mentions environmental factors and genetics.  I do believe that genetics plays a big roll here, but to have such a sharp increase over the last 10 years sort of cancels out the genetic factor for most people.  We turn to look at the food and drug use with that fact in mind.

If our bacteria balance is truly a major factor in the increase of Crohn’s, how do we completely overturn it and keep it that way??

If anyone knows the answer to this question, please chime in and help us out?? So far I have been able to do this to some extent with juicing, antibiotic foods like garlic and oregano and fermented foods.

I think good vs bad bacteria is a very good option for treatment considering the success with high potency probiotics (VSL#3).  This is a treatment, but it does not permanently fix the imbalance.

There almost needs to be a sequence where you cleanse out everything like a colonoscopy.  Next, kill all bacteria with natural methods and then add in large amounts of good bacteria.  After this is done eat food that will keep the bacteria in check and that should induce full remission.

I am still looking for a perfect way to do this, but so far there is no way to keep the balance of bacteria in check forever. It seems like just taking a probiotic is just not enough.

Here is what I would like to try:  I would do a full colonoscopy prep to cleanse everything out.  Next, take flagyl for 2 weeks to a month to kill everything.  Next VSL#3 and juicing daily to repopulate.  I think that would be a good option, but it’s getting the doctor to prescribe the drug and the cost of the VSL#3 that stops me.

Also, I get myself in trouble to doing things not suggested by my doc ,but sometimes it pays off.

Juicing: its role in Crohn’s

Back a year ago, I was excited to tell people I “had”(past tense) Crohn’s, that I healed it.  I did do this through juicing, diet and supplements, but I have learned unfortunately that it will always be there.  Little things like not sleeping enough, a bad diet choice and stress – (a BIG one!) can get it to flare up again.  Stress did this for me and I am having a tough time getting this under control presently.

Everything that I have written about as far as healing Crohn’s,  I still believe to be true.  I think when you juice raw organic fruits, vegetables, herbs and super foods you heal the damage Crohn’s inflammation has done.  It’s the strength of the immune system that attacks the good healthy parts, that is the mystery here.  Is it genetic that our immune systems are on overload? Is it the lack of a certain vitamin or the overgrowth of good to bad bacteria?

The one thing that I do know is that the true role of juicing for crohn’s is ultimate nutrition in one glass.  I am not trying to fight inflammation or bacteria overgrowth anymore.  I am looking to provide the maximum most potent vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and prebiotics to a body that cannot eat that food.  If you provide this nutrition daily, then you have a better/very good chance to suppress Crohn’s and put it into remission.

My diet at this point consists of soft and very digestible foods.  I tried the vegan diet and my body could not break down the salads and fiber.  For me it most likely got stuck causing the last obstruction I had.  I was not happy with this because that diet was so super healthy along with juicing and I felt great!

I still believe that drinking as much raw juice as possible can play a key role in placing you into remission.  You also need to eat foods like garlic to keep the bacteria in check.  You also need to take your medication as directed.  I learned this the hard way 2x, but hey I was being hopeful!!

I drink about 24oz+ of juice 1x per day and I get all the nutrition I am missing.  It is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, nutrient dense, energizing and anti-cancer as well.  I take my medicine as I am told to now!  I take a liquid vitamin because I can’t absorb vit B and D very well – who knew!!:)

Now, if you don’t juice like this and you eat a diet void of fruits, veggies and herbs, how are you preparing your body to fight the inflammation or harmful bacteria if you cannot actually eat the food?

My go to juice:

  • 2 apples
  • 3-4 carrots
  • 1 beet
  • Kale
  • Lemon
  • Ginger

Enjoy your day everyone!:)

**Current Natural Plan**

I seem to be always changing my strategy when it comes to natural remedies, but I think this whole thing is a changing process.  I have adapted my thinking on medicinal interventions and having natural remedies added has not changed.  You need it!

Diet:  I remain on a soft low fiber diet called Low Residue.  It just means that all food will break down easily and leave little waste to clog me up.  This means eliminating insoluble fiber from fruits and veggies.  Without these, where do I get nutrition? http://www.nmh.org/ccurl/84/948/lowfiber-diet07.pdf

Medical Interventions: I take my Lexapro 1x a day and this keeps the stress down very low.  I internalize all stress and I keep a smile on the outside.  I take Prednisone 2x a day and I will be off to the doc this week to see about weaning down and replacing with a longer term – Which I will Take As Directed!!!! 🙂

Current Natural Plan:  The afternoon when I come home from work is natural intervention time.  This is when I get my maximum nutrition to help with what I can’t eat throughout the day.

  • I make a 32oz mason jar of juice.  It usually ends up red or green, but the key to all the juice combos is to think anti-inflammatory.  Kale, Ginger, Turmeric, Lemon, Beets, Celery, Pineapple, ect…This is when I get more nutrition than the average joe who eats a normal diet.
  • I take 70 Billion Count Probiotic.  I purchased Dr. Mercola’s Probiotic brand because I like the work he does and what he speaks about.  His also has research that backs up some of the strains.  The juice also helps to feed the probiotics with prebiotics to keep it healthy.
  • I take a liquid vitamin. I take a highly potent vitamin from Alive.  It has vitamins, green foods and tons of other good stuff in it. It does not taste awesome, but I have juiced garlic, carrot and parsley once and I can handle it:)
  • I take my Oregano Oil.  This is my natural antibiotic that will only kill any bacterial overgrowth and not harm my probiotic strains. Doctors do prescribe an antibiotic like this, but it might kill your probiotic.

In addition to all of this, I still need to take a tablespoon of Miralax with dinner to keep things super easy.  I also take a Metamucil fiber supplement in the morning with breakfast to get my fiber that I miss.

NICK THIS SEEMS SOO EASY!!

It is not, but it is my current plan and I deal with it daily.  I have a routine and I tweak it if needed.  I am trying and not giving up.  That is the key!! Later ya’ll:)
